Dancers' Study Trips 2018-19

Sponsored by the China Merchants Charitable Foundation, Hong Kong Dance Company’s Principal Dancer Laura Pan Lingjuan and Dancer Yvonne Tsoi Yuen-on went on overseas study trips to New York and Seoul respectively from late 2018 to early 2019.

Laura enrolled in Gibney Dance Company’s NYC Winter Study and Steps on Broadway’s professional classes, exploring different dance genres alongside top-notch performers from the world over. While in Seoul, Yvonne studied a wide variety of traditional dances at Korea National University of Arts, tried out K-pop at One Million Dance Studio and attended an experimental workshop “Objects and Body” given by European artist Pietro Marullo.

Besides taking dance classes, they also attended many performances and visited exhibitions and museums. In New York, Laura picked a number of Broadway’s recent hits such as Hamilton and Frozen, without missing out must-see classics like The Phantom of the Opera. She also attended dance performances by Nederlands Dans Theater 2, Batsheva Dance Company and Malpaso Dance Company, as well as a handful of off-broadway theatre productions.

Yvonne attended several Korean traditional arts performances as well as cutting-edge presentations in the SIDance Festival like Border Tales by Protein Dance Company. She was also blown away by the immersive “theatre party” Fuerza Bruta Wayra.

After their trips, other artistic staff in the Company also benefited from their enlightening experiences in a sharing session.
